Where’d the Trolls Go?

Not that I’ve had a lot of them, and not that I would want to have more, but I have to wonder where the trolls who have hit this blog from time-to-time have gone? I don’t moderate posts here, and I only delete spam, so where are all the pro-war, pro-Shrub, What?-Me-Worry? trolls who were doing the cyberspace equivalent of ringing my doorbell and running just six months ago?

I took a short tour this morning of some of their blogs and was shocked – SHOCKED – to find that there’s hardly a peep coming out from them about The War on Terror (TM) these days. Or about the Smirking Chimp, the economy, the Israeli-Hizballah conflict, etc. Even Kender’s Musings, whose masthead seems to imply all-War on Terror TM coverage all-the-time, hasn’t touched on anything more threatening to America than the ACLU since June!

(Normally I don’t plug a right-wing site, but as someone once pointed out, the wingnuts have been good to me on occassion.)

Could it be that all is not well in right-wing fantasy land?

Nah. And anyone who thinks so probably just Hates Freedom (TM).

    2) I am sure you’d love for me to call your radio show so that you can control exactly how much of what I have to say gets broadcast. I’m sure you’d be all to happy to record our “conversation,” remix it, and replay it piecemeal in whatever context best suits your rant du jour.     It’s the real people, who are out there working and paying taxes and living the American dream, who served and served honorably…these real people are the ones who VOTE. Many of my blogging friends are Marines and Navy men- who fought in wars and who know the true meaning of freedom. They didn’t use their service as a stepping stone for a political career- like many of the WIMPS you have listed above. YES, they are wimps. Their service means nothing when they cannot support this country now.     What Ric says in Comment # 10 is the absolute truth, and as far as Primavera (on an irrelevant note, with a nic like that, you must be a vegan)’s comparison of Jefferson & Madison to today’s liberals is concerned, all I can say is that it’s grossly presumptuous. If any of those early American patriots could see what “liberals” have become today, they would be ashamed {they’d probably become afflicted with a new psychological disorder, called LDS, Liberal Derangement Syndrome, LOL}.

    As far as throwing military service into the mix, as Raven mentioned above, traitors like Johns Murtha and Kerry don’t exactly live up to any shining standards of positive reference, nor do any of the other opportunistic liberal politicians who rode the coattails of their military service into politics so they could abuse the very freedoms they purportedly fought for and thousands of others died for.

    The House has 117 veterans: 69 Republicans and 48 Democrats, including one woman who is a Republican.
    In the Senate, 35 members are veterans: 19 Republicans and 16 Democrats. They have served in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and Kosovo, and during times of peace, as well as in the Reserves and the National Guard. One Senator is a former Secretary of the Navy. There has been a steady decline in the number of members who have served in the military, which may be attributed in part to the end of the Selective Service System draft in 1973.

    Of the above numbers you will notice that there is no mention of radio and television personalities, actors and political pundits.

I would love to see 100% voter participation in this country, but the reality of living in a democracy like ours is that its citizens are free not to participate.

    Many of my blogging friends are Marines and Navy men- who fought in wars and who know the true meaning of freedom.

    Again, please make a point. A lot of Marine and Navy women – who fought in wars – also have ideas about the “true meaning of freedom.” The same goes for civilians who never served. And new citizens who escaped war or poverty or persecution God-knows-where. If you’re going to throw out a term like that, define it. Keep in mind that your definition may not be everyone’s.

    I wonder how many of these people on your LIST are like John Kerry and John Murtha- you know the types- those who got medals for a scratch, most likely caused by their own hand.

    Actually, I don’t know the type. But since you brought it up:

    John Kerry’s service record was posted on his Web site during the 2004 election; George W. Bush’s records are
    reported as having been destroyed.

    Only one out of the fifteen largest newspapers in the country found anything substantial in any of the Swiftboat Veterans for “Truth”‘s allegations that Kerry’s account of his service wasn’t everything he said it was. The Department of the Navy should have the final word in any case, and it did. Accordingto the Department of the Navy Kerry earned his medals, period.

    Not one person who actually served with John Kerry disputes his account of his service; I can only find references to four people who claim to remember the Shrub fulfilling his service obligations, though the credability of at least one of these people – Calhoun – is suspect since his story doesn’t square with the timeline the administration adheres to.

    One of the most prominent people who actually did lie (and was caught) about Kerry’s service records is
    Tony Snow, the current White House spokesperson.

    John Murtha, while being similarly smeared, is also equally well represented by the facts, Anne Coulter’s lies to the contrary. While she claimed Murtha was refusing to release his medical records, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette apparently didn’t have any trouble finding them.

    The most public assault on John Murtha personally came from Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH), who claimed that Col. Dan Bubp,a Marine, contacted her and asked her to convery the following message to Rep. Murtha:

    “He asked me to send Congress a message: Stay the course. He also asked me to send Congressman Murtha a message, that cowards cut and run; Marines never do.”

    Bubp, a Marine reservist who is actually a Congressman himself, denied Schmidt’s claims, stating for the record that he never spoke to her about that topic or anything even remotely related to it. This didn’t stop Rush Limbaugh and Tucker Carlson from pimping the story, claiming that Bubp was an active duty Marine on-the-ground in Iraq (source).

    Now there’s a compelling argument.

    The two men you cite aren’t just proclaiming honorable service, their service has been extensively investigated and verified (see above).

    Assuming that “cannot stand on one foot” is an allusion to not being able to formulate an effective strategy for defending the country, I beg to differ. From Nitpicker (who also sources his arguments, unlike some people I know):

    The proposal on the Iraq war, from Senator Bill Frist, the majority leader, and Senator John W. Warner, Republican of Virginia, chairman of the Armed Services Committee, would require the administration to provide extensive new quarterly reports to Congress on subjects like progress in bringing in other countries to help stabilize Iraq. The other appeals related to Iraq are nonbinding and express the position of the Senate.

    The plan stops short of a competing Democratic proposal that moves toward establishing dates for a phased withdrawal of troops from Iraq. But it is built upon the Democratic approach and makes it clear that senators of both parties are increasingly eager for Iraqis to take control of their country in coming months and open the door to removing American troops (emphasis mine).

    Mr. Warner said the underlying message was, “we really mean business, Iraqis, get on with it.” The senator, an influential party voice on military issues, said he did not interpret the wording of his plan as critical of the administration, describing it as a “forward-looking” approach.

    “It is not a question of satisfaction or dissatisfaction,” he said. “This reflects what has to be done.”

    Democrats said the plan represented a shift in Republican sentiment on Iraq and was an acknowledgment of growing public unrest with the course of the war and the administration’s frequent call for patience. “I think it signals the fact that the American people are demanding change, and the Republicans see that that’s something that they have to follow,” said Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader.

    Mr. Frist said an important reason for the Republican proposal was to offer an alternative to the Democratic call for a withdrawal timetable. “The real objective was to get out of this timeline of cutting and running that the Democrats have in their amendment,” he said.

    Mr. Warner said he decided to take the Democratic proposal and edit it to his satisfaction in an effort to find common ground between the parties on the issue.

    Let’s talk about the apparent centerpiece of Raven’s argument – the 2005 Defense Appropriations Bill:

    Was a vote against the 2005 Defense Appropriations bill a vote against members of the U.S. military?  The soundbite culture of the right would have you believe “yes,” but the facts say otherwise.

    Congressional Pork
    The 2005 Defense Appropriations Bill contained over $391 B in spending, more than $12B of which were pet pork barrel projects inserted into the bill by members of the Republican dominated Defense Appropriations Committee which were neither requested by the President nor recommended by the Secretary of Defense.  In other words, the current Congressional majority was looking to skim a nickel off of every taxpayer dollar intended for the troops during a time of national conflict.

    If that weren’t bad enough, the bill also contained almost no information on where any of the money – requested by the White House or not – was going to be spent.  At a time in the nation’s history when we are facing historic budget deficits, a staggering national debt, and are heavily indebted to hostile foreign powers, the Republican majority in Congress – with the backing of the President – attempted to hold U.S. military service personnel hostage with an appropriations bill that benefited only their political ambitions.  Among the more obnoxious of the “pet” projects:

    $4 million for the construction of a series of entirely stainless steel bathrooms
    $2 million to install airbags on commercial aircraft
    $3 million Leak proof transmission drip pans.
    $1.9 million for the Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Celebration.
    $1.5 million for a virtual reality spray paint simulator system in Pine City, Minnesota
    $4.3 million for vocational education of Alaskan miners
    $1 million for a biathlon trail upgrade at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
    $4.3 million for a program that the Pentagon did not request funds for: the SmarTruck, a souped-up Ford F-350 for use in combat, added by Ted Stevens (R-AK)
    $110 million for two F-15’s that the Pentagon didn’t request, added by Kit Bond (R-MO)

    Who Benefits?

    Not the soldiers, that’s for sure. 

    While there were Democrats who stood to benefit, the per capita pork to be spread among the constituents of the five most senior Democrats on the Appropriations Committee combined came to less than one-half of the per capita spending earmarked for the home state of the committee’s chair, Ted Stevens (R-AK).  In fact, when the dollars earmarked for the five most senior members of each party on the Committee are combined, Republicans out-porked Democrats by a margin greater than 2:1!

    As bad as the pork barrel spending was, the bill was made worse by Sen. Stevens’ efforts to tie defense appropriations to drilling in ANWAR.  The effort failed, and Sen. Stevens’ was roundly criticized by both parties (http://mediamatters.org/items/200512220013).

    Harm Done to the Military
    Despite the claims of the right-wing spin machine, the real harm done to the troops comes from passage of pork-laiden defense bills.  Specifically:

    “a $2.8 billion cut in funds for operations and maintenance and other readiness accounts that contribute to the war effort in Iraq and Afghanistan. The military’s ability to fight effectively is largely dependent on adequate funding in these accounts. In all, Congress cut $8.2 billion out of the entire bill to help make room for projects requested by individual lawmakers.”

    However, even with these cuts the overall bill contained nearly $1 billion less for the armed forces than was actually requested by the White House (Source: http://democrats.senate.gov/dpc/dpc-new.cfm?doc_name=lb-108-2-165). 

    Homeland Security was also short-changed to the tune of $300 million, and the so-called “No Child Left Behind” program was underfunded by $1 billion.

    And which party is the majority party in Congress? 

    The Republicans.

    So which party was really looking out for the best interest of our men and women in Iraq and Afghanistan, not to mention U.S. civilians in the crosshairs of Al-Queda their children, and our environment?

    The opposition that voted against the bill – the Democrats.

    Military Readiness

    The Defense Appropriations Bill passed, pork and all.  That’s what happens when a single party holds the majority in both houses of Congress and the White House.  Here’s what’s happened to the men and women in the field since the passage of this great patriotic piece of legislation by the country’s “pro-military” party:

    The Defense Department reports that “the vast majority of units not deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan are at the lowest levels of readiness and the army reserve face an even more serious situation – almost all of their units are reported to be at the lowest readiness levels.”

    The Defense Department is illegally placing female soldiers into units and situations that are required by law to be all-male.  The administration has “subcontracted” the problem to the RAND Corporation, which has a long and documented history of “a contemptuous attitude toward Congress, especially since RAND has a record of eliminating opinions of soldiers in the field on obvious problems caused by flawed policies.” (http://www.cmrlink.org/)
    The Army has lowered its recruiting standards to the point where the number of Category IV recruits (the bottom-third of those who take – not pass, but take – the Armed Forces aptitude test) admitted into the service branches has doubled. (http://www.slate.com/id/2133908/)

    Veterans’ Benefits
    The Republican majority has trimmed nearly $1 billion from the VA budget, and has targeted another $15 billion from veterans’ programs over the next ten years.  The net result of the cuts:
    “This could mean the loss of 19,000 nurses, equating to the loss of 6.6 million outpatient visits or more than three-quarters of a million hospital bed days,” says Edward Heath, National Commander of the Disabled American Veterans.
    Meanwhile 1 out of 3 Iraq and Afghanistan War veterans have applied for VA benefits, and of these an estimated 90% are disabled, low-income, or not actually Veterans but their surviving relatives.
